UVRF SCULLING PROGRAMS 2022

Registration now open!

In sculling, each rower holds 2 oars and rows in small boats. UVRF owns sculling boats, including singles (one person), doubles (2 person), and quads (4 person) that are available to club members under certain conditions. If you are already a sweep rower, sculling is an excellent way to develop boat "feel," balance and technical skills.

In 2022, Learn-to-Scull clinics are available for first-time scullers along with sculling clinics for different levels of experience.  Weekend clinics for more advanced scullers may be available for improving technique and racing skills. Free 1.5-hour Sweep-to-Scull clinics are available for rowers who have completed a sweep program at UVRF or elsewhere. Clinics are open to members at least 14 years old and will be grouped by ability.

Over the course of the season, depending on demand and coach availability, there                                       likely will be revisions and additions of several programs.

Using Club Sculling Equipment

Club boats are available to members who paid the Club Boat Rental (Equipment Use) fees for 2022.

Club members have the privilege of using club singles, doubles and quads throughout the summer season (roughly from the first week of June through mid-October). See Use of Club Singles and Doubles for more information. Please note that use of the club’s racing doubles and quads requires additional certification. See Sculling Equipment Certification to learn more about using this equipment.

Sweep-to-Scull Clinics

Coaches: volunteer coaches

Several 1.5-hour sessions will be held for sweep rowers to learn the basics of sculling. Participants will learn where UVRF’s recreational and racing singles and sculling oars are kept at the Kendal Riverfront Park, the basics of the sculling stroke, small boat handling, safety precautions, and etiquette on the river. Topics such as how to reserve a boat, sign out and sign in will be covered as well. The program is free to anyone who has completed a sweep program at UVRF or elsewhere.

After completing the clinic, club members who have paid the Club Boat Rental (Equipment Use) fee will have access to club singles and doubles for the rest of the summer when a dock monitor is present (early morning and late afternoon hours). A captain’s test can be scheduled in either a recreational or racing single, depending on each rower’s skill level and interest. If you pass the captain’s test in a racing single, you can row when there isn’t a dock monitor present; if you pass it in a recreational single, you can row when there isn't a dock monitor present as long as you have a buddy to help carry the boat. To arrange to take a captain's test, email UVRF at .
